Marbling

Marbling

In class we experimented with different types of Marbling. We did Suminagashi, carrageenan, foam, and ambrite pastel marbling. I honestly had a lot of fun with each type of marbling.
Above you will see some pictures of my Suminagashi marbling. We did this technique in class. Many found it to be a bit of a challenge, but I actually had a pretty fun and easy time with it. The marbling itself didn’t come out the strongest in my opinion but that’s only because the colors aren’t as vibrant.
Suminagashi technique
Tools:
Water
2 fine tipped paint brushes
Suminagashi marbling ink set
Clean tub
Paper
Dish soap
Technique:
Take your clean tub and fill the bottom with water about an inch deep
Pick whatever color of ink you’d like and put a little on one of your paintbrushes
On the other paintbrush put a tiny bit of dish soap
Dip the tip of your ink brush in the tub of water
Do the same with the soap brush
Take turns dipping brushes in water until you have your desired look
Submerge piece of paper in water and pull out
Let it sit out to dry
Here are some examples of my carrageenan marbling. I had a lot of fun with this one! still not my favorite results but I definitely had the most fun with this one.

Carrageenan Technique-
Tools:
Tub
Water
Carrageenan
Ink
Blender
Paper
Tools to play
Technique:
Mix carrageenan and water until thin
Pour carrageenan into tub (about an inch or 2 deep)
Drop ink onto surface of mixture
Use playing tools to manipulate surface of mixture to create marbling
Place paper in mixture and pull out
Let it sit out to dry
Here is my examples with the Foam marbling. In my opinion this technique comes out with the best results. The technique is easy to do, the colors come out vibrant, and the foam is easy to manipulate in your favor.

Foam Technique:
Tools:
Shaving cream
Piece of cardboard
Paper plate
Toothpick or comb
Ink
Paper
Technique:
Put shaving cream on paper plate
Use cardboard to flatten across plate
Drop ink in foam
Use toothpick/comb for desired design
Place paper over foam
Pull Paper off Foam
Use cardboard to scrape away excess foam
Admire Results
Lastly, you will see my ambrite chalk pastel marbling. This technique is super easy and fun. Colors aren’t as vibrant but its great for kids and easy to do.

Ambrite pastel technique:
Tools:
Ambrite Chalk pastels
plastic knife
Tub of water
Tooth pick
Paper
Technique:
Using Knife scrape Chalk pastel dust over tub of water
Use toothpick to create design in water
Place paper in water
Pull out to dry
