Sketchbook Assignments

Over the semester we were required to do 10 sketchbook assignments. 7 of which were created by us students. All of us were required to do all the assignments, even the ones we came up with.

For the first sketchbook assignment our teacher created. The assignment stated: 16 crayons, self-portrait and a reflective surface (not a mirror or your cellphone). As this assignment was pretty open, I went ahead and drew a picture of me and my dog at our favorite spot. For the reflective surface I chose the water at our spot, and since it doesnt say we have to draw ourseleves in the reflective surface I had an easy out. Here is a picture of my finsihed assignment.

Sketchbook Assignment #2 was also created by our teacher. It was titled: Mapping Your Identity
We were to begin by drawing a three inch by three inch square in the middle of our page. In the square, we were to place a drawing of ourselves (to be interpreted however we wanted). Radiating outside the square we were to build a concept map of who we are. We were also required to include a title block showing who the sketchbook belongs to lost. The medium was open. I chose pencil. I also chose to map my identity by including thing I like. I drew a cartoon me with it's tongue out (as I always have my tongue out in pictures) surrounding the square I included my favorite shows (buffy and friends), my favorite super hero (Spiderman), my favorite band was included by one of the symbols from one of their albums (pink floyd), and a yin yang as they have always been my thing. Below is a picture.

Sketchbook assignment #3 was actually my assignment. I chose to have everyone use markers to draw their favorite animal in an environment you wouldn't normally find it. I figured this was pretty open as materials are still open as long as they use marker in some way. They style is open as they get to choose, and the environment is also open, as long as it is peculiar. I chose to draw a cartoon fox under water. Below is my image.

Sketchbook assignment #4 was created by a fellow classmate, Elyssa Freese. For the assignment we were use charcoal and at least one watercolor to draw something cold within a hot environment. For mine I chose to draw a snowman in the desert as it was the first thing to come to mind. Below is my image.

For sketchbook assignmetn #5 Joslyn Hagener came up with it. She had us use watercolor and crayons to draw what our house would look like underwater. Her ideas was to have us focus on how the materials work together. The interpretation of the assignment was pretty open too. I chose to draw an outline of a house underwater as if i were to have a house underwater, it would be clear so I could see whats around me. Below is my image.

For sketchbook assignment #6 Kristen Jones came up with a mosaic assignment. We were to create an image of a character with an ability we wish we had. we had to create the character using only scraps of paper and glue to create a mosaic interpretation. I chose to create a character that could fly. I put him in the sky with a cape. Below is my image.

For sketchbook #7 our teacher had us create two sketches for our printmaking assignment. We had to do a letter for a relief block print. The other sketch was to use an image to tell a small part of a larger story. For my letter I chose the first letter of my first name. For the second sketch I chose to do two sunflowers intertwined to represent the story of my fiancé and my relationship. Below are my images.

For sketchbook #8 my classmate Morgan created we were to take a copy of notes from another class and do a black out poem. From the poem we created we were to sketch the poem using chalk pastels. I chose to do the notes from my art history paper. It was over Edvard Munch. I did black out poetry to create a hiaku. My poem was
A tortured artist
Despair, Anxiety, Scream
he's deeply troubled.
I chose to draw it more anxious like as that's how I was feeling at the time as it was near midterms, and it goes well with the poem. Below is my image.

For sketchbook assignment #9 Landry came up with the assignment so that we had to create two mood drawings. We were to draw from a photo we took ourselves, using colored pencil and the crosshatching method. Once one image was done in one single color we were to create the exact same image again, only this time using a different color. I chose to do an image of a drawing I had done previously. In the first I chose to use blue. in the second I used red. the blue makes the image feel more sad, the red makes the image feel more angry. Below is my image.

For sketchbook #10 Mikayla had us use one color of water color and only one brush to paint a plant with a variety of values. I did two plants, both in green. Below is my image.
