Batik

Image
In class we did two different batiks. In each we used a similar method using a mixture of half toothpaste and half lotion. For the first we did a black t-shirt, we were to create a design on the t-shirt using the toothpaste/lotion mixture. I chose to do a tie-dye design and twisted the t-shirt into a spiral and applied rubber bands around it. After that I applied the toothpaste/lotion mixture in various spots on the t-shirt. I then had to set the shirt out to dry. Once the shirt dried we sprayed the shirts in bleach. after the bleach set for a little bit we washed the mixture and bleach off the shirt. Everywhere that was covered in the mixture stayed the same color of the t-shirt and everywhere left blank bleached to an orangish color. Below is my finished product. The second method we used was with ink instead of bleach. We took a piece of blank cloth and created a design using the mixture. Once the mixture had dried we then applied different colors of ink. Once the ink d...

Weaving

Image
In class we worked on weavings. We used pieces of card stock and cut little slits at both ends of it. Once that was finished we chose two different colors of yarn. the first color we wrapped around the card stock making sure to stick it around each little slit we had cut. Once finished with that we used a weaving needle and attached the second color of yarn to it. Then we just weaved it through the other yarn. Once it was the size we wanted we just cut the strings around the slits and tied them off to create the finished piece. Mine is a book mark. Below is a picture.

Felting

Image
In Class we experimented with wet, dry, and combination techniques for felting. first we tried wet felting, where we took different pieces of color treated wool, we made the design we wanted and put it in a Ziploc bag. We then covered the wool with water and rolled over it until it was flat and the wool had fussed together. Below is my finished product. We Also did dry felting. First we started by making dry felt balls. We took pieces of wool and stabbed it on a foam block using a felting needle. We did this until it was nice and firm. After the felt balls, using the same method, we did a form. I chose to to a dinosaur using a cookie cutter to help me shape it. I then stabbed the form into a canvas using the same method, and painted around it to create a painting with  a felt figure. We also were required to do an armature of some sort, I chose to use the same dry felting method and used pipe cleaners as the armature and created an apple, which I attached to an old ves...

Paper and Book Making

Image
In class we learned how to make paper and how to make books. We learned a few different methods of paper making. The first method we learned was from recycled paper and water. We had two different buckets, one we filled up with white recycled paper which we tore apart into tiny pieces and let soak in water for a few days. The other was filled with multicolored recycled paper which we also tore into tiny pieces. After the paper soaked we drained the remaining water and took the paper and blended it with a blender. once the paper was nice and mixed we poured it into a large bin on water. we used deckles and screens and dunked them into the large bins. Once we pulled the deckle out of the water there was a think sheet of the blended paper on the screen. We then shook it out over the water to ensure that the sheet was evenly spread. We used sponges to get any of the excess water off and then added whatever dried flowers or sparkles we wanted and let them dry out. We each had to do both ...

Alcohol Inks and Paste Paper

Image
In class we experimented with paste paper and alcohol inks. For the paste paper we used the Henry Morris paste recipe which is basically a mixture of cornstarch and water. We also applied pigment to the paste to create color. Once the paste is applied to the paper you can use different tools such as combs, toothpicks, or even your fingers, to create designs in the paste to create a patter or design on the paper itself. Below are some pictures of my finished results. For the Alcohol inks we used alcohol inks and alcohol. You can use either the ink or the alcohol first and it helps to have a straw so you can blow the ink around as you please. With my finished products the first one (below) was just a test to see how the ink would work on its own without using a straw, I did hold the paper so that the ink would move down the page instead of just laying the paper flat on its back. For the second one, which I think turned out much better I used the straw to blow the ink ...

Marbling

Image
Marbling In class we experimented with different types of Marbling. We did Suminagashi, carrageenan, foam, and ambrite pastel marbling. I honestly had a lot of fun with each type of marbling. Above you will see some pictures of my Suminagashi marbling. We did this technique in class. Many found it to be a bit of a challenge, but I actually had a pretty fun and easy time with it. The marbling itself didn’t come out the strongest in my opinion but that’s only because the colors aren’t as vibrant. Suminagashi technique – Tools: Water 2 fine tipped paint brushes Suminagashi marbling ink set Clean tub Paper Dish soap Technique: Take your clean tub and fill the bottom with water about an inch deep Pick whatever color of ink you’d like and put a little on one of your paintbrushes On the other paintbrush put a tiny bit of dish soap Dip the tip of your ink brush in the tub of water Do the same with the soap brush Take turns dipping brushes in water until you have your desired...
